GDMS is the most comprehensive and sensitive technique available for the analysis of solids. Atomic Spectroscopy. Glow Discharge Optical Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry. In the fields of nuclear technology, the characterization of nuclear fuels with respect to elements and individual isotopes is highly relevant. An example is the sorption or desorption of actinides in various host rocks or technical barrier materials. This problem can partly be overcome by using a high-resolution mass spectrometer, such as a double-focusing instrument or a Fourier-transform mass spectrometer, or by using high purity gases and special purification systems to suppress these interferences. The GD ion source gained popularity in the past two decades on account of its stability, sensitivity and operational simplicity. Due to charge-up effects on the sample, the analysis of nonconducting materials is difficult by GDMS. One key difference between MS and optical detection techniques is that the sample material must be physically transferred out of the source. Glow discharge analytical spectro-metric techniques are based on the detection and quan-tification of sample species within the plasma. From chemical analysis measurements by glow discharge mass spectrometry and Zeeman-corrected graphite furnace atomic absorption, the main elements detected in CZT substrates, grown in three companies (TI, II-VI, and JME) by their standard processes, the HB and VB techniques, were found to be Li, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Cl, Se, and Cu, and were attributed to the crystal growth processes more than to the raw materials, except for Se originating from Te [272]. Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GDMS) enables the elemental analysis of solid samples by sputtering in a low-pressure DC argon discharge. FIGURE 13.5. An electric potentialof several hundred volts … Glow-discharge-mass spectrometry (GD-MS) has received increasing attention over the last decade. However, the application of GDMS in the determination of radionuclides is limited due to its low sensitivity and limited accessibility (Hou and Roos, 2008). Chemical analysis by, Reference Module in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering, Spectrochimica Acta Part B: Atomic Spectroscopy. Figure 8.3. 2.1 Fundamental Glow Discharge Processes The fundamental processes occurring in the discharge define a number of discrete regions. Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry. A prepared flat sample is mounted on the glow discharge source, the source is evacuated and backfilled with argon. Therefore, several techniques, such as mixing with high-purity metal powder or the use of a secondary cathode, have been applied during the analysis of electrically insulating samples. This clearly demonstrates that these peaks are interfering peaks due to ArFe+ clusters, which can be avoided by using neon as the discharge gas. Incorporation of substitutional impurities may be enhanced if there is an appreciable concentration of vacancies (Rudolph et al., 1994). Hence, the common methodologies used during the generation of quantitative values and the analytical applications of GDMS will be summarized. Thus, for a discharge of 1 kV and 2 mA at 1 torr, the optimum cell for MS is one having 2 cm as both length and radius [199]. These types of studies, which imply depth information, are important for the conception and planning of nuclear waste repositories, and GDMS is a highly versatile tool for that purpose (Betti and de las Heras, 2004). Metallic alloy fuels consisting of UNdZr and UPuZr with uranium content of up to 81% were analyzed semiquantitatively by GDMS using the signal intensity of the analyte and taking into account the specific element sensitivity of uranium.
